Job Description

The Data Science Analyst is responsible for performing advanced consumer analytics on the business critical Lifetouch National School Studios project of enhancing and centralizing packaging and pricing. These analytics will be accomplished using the following skills: predictive modelling, data munging, statistical programming & principles and data visualization & communication. This will include providing support to other various strategic initiatives. This position is recognized as an expert, solves complex problems, takes broad perspective to identify solutions, and works independently with guidance only in the most complex situations.


 This position will focus on the following skills

    • Predictive Modelling – Ability to create and implement predictive algorithms using a variety of approaches and techniques.
    • Technical Tool Set – Proficient in a statistical programming language, like R or Python, and a database querying language like SQL.
    • Data Visualization and Communication – Ability to describe your findings or the way techniques work to audiences, both technical and non-technical. Understand principles behind visually encoding data and communicating information.
    • Statistics – A strong understanding of basic statistical principles, statistical tests, distributions, maximum likelihood estimators and understanding when different techniques are (or aren’t) a valid approach.
  • Time and Effort Allocations (on average)
    • Data Extraction, Management, and Cleansing (50%)
      • Identify sources for data needed to solve research and business problems.
      • Manage the data and use data cleansing methods to improve the fidelity of the data.
    • Develop Business Analysis and Prediction Solutions (30%)
      • Work with team members to identify appropriate approaches / algorithms for solving specific predictive or analytic problems.
      • Test and validate that the solutions result in meaningful and correct conclusions for the business problem.
    • Provide Recommendations for Business Problems (20%)
      • Understand business situations and problems.
      • Identify and recommend Data Science solutions that can be used to solve critical business problems.

Master’s Degree in a quantitative/mathematical/computer science field or emphasis or equivalent experience.

Experience (7-10 years): 

  • R and/or Python languages
  • SQL databases and database querying languages
  • Cloud tools like Amazon Redshift
  • Retail industry consumer analytics experience including: ecommerce and segmentation analytics
  • Statistics (e.g. hypothesis, testing and summary statistics)
  • Algorithm and data structure skills
  • Demonstrated self-learning and skill enhancement
  • Data mining – including retrieving, cleansing and extrapolating your own data.
  • Management decision modelling
  • Data visualization and reporting techniques

Preferred Experience:

  • Machine learning tools and techniques (e.g. k-nearest neighbors, random forests, ensemble methods, etc.)
  • Unstructured data techniques
  • Math (e.g. linear algebra, calculus and probability)
  • Big data platforms like Hadoop, Hive & Pig
